Our denomination, the Reformed Church in America, is the oldest Protestant denomination in America, established as an American denomination by Dutch settlers in 1628.
The word “Reformed” refers to a belief that the church must be constantly reforming itself according to biblical teaching. A large group of churches with origins in western and eastern Europe (which includes the Presbyterians and United Church of Christ) claim this heritage and identity. All trace their roots to the Protestant Reformation inspired by the teaching of the Swiss theologian, John Calvin.
The Reformed Church is best known in parts of the country that were settled by the Dutch, such as northern New Jersey, New York, western Michigan and Iowa, even though its membership is representative of the complete ethnic mix that defines American life. Two of the best known Reformed Churches are Marble Collegiate in New York City where Norman Vincent Peale was pastor; and the Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, California where Dr. Robert Schuller established a television ministry. President Theodore Roosevelt grew up in the Reformed Church. The well known Apache Indian leader, Geronimo, became an elder in a Reformed Church late in life.
As can be seen in our name, Celebrate Life! The Reformed Church in Plano we are a congregation that celebrates God’s gift of life – created life as well as the new life we enjoy as disciples of Jesus Christ. Celebrating life allows us to live with positive attitudes, full of enthusiasm for the many opportunities God gives for service to him through service to our community and the world. (Read our Vision Statement).
As Celebrate Life! The Reformed Church in Plano, we are deeply involved in caring for the community. We do our part by participating in the Samaritan Inn, the Women's Shelter, JobNet, The Plano Food Pantry and many other agencies and helping organizations. We also place a high value on Christian education for all ages, with a dynamic children’s and youth program.
Most important is our commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive community of faith. Please join us for worship so you can experience it for yourself!
