Seeking God

Seek and Grow in the Lord (08-29-2010)

Profiles in Courage

"In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience – the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men – each man must decide for himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can define that ingredient – they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this each man must look into his own soul." President John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage.

Annually since 1989, the President John F. Kennedy Library Foundation has presented the Profiles in Courage Award to a chosen public official.  Based on the understanding of courage outlined by the late president in his Pulitzer Prize winning book, the award seeks to make Americans aware of the conscientious and courageous acts of their public servants, and to encourage elected officials to choose principles over partisanship, and to do what is right, rather than what is expedient.

As children and servants of the Living God, we face the choice every minute of every day to do what is right, rather than what is expedient. Specifically, doing what is right is following the will of God. Not only is this quite often the exact opposite of expedient; but it just as often brings with it great risk to our personal, emotional and financial security. Simply stated, it takes great courage to take up our cross and follow Jesus. Together, with the Holy Spirit as our guide, we'll look into our souls. What will we find?

Being the Church in a World that Doesn't Do Church

The full title of the Book of Acts is "The Acts of the Apostles," although a better title would be "The Acts of the Spirit" as what it's about is the Holy Spirit working to create a united community of believers out of people who have nothing in common but Christ.  Its about God creating the Church throught the Holy Spirit.  Acts will be our text as we take a look at how the Holy Spirit continues to create and re-create a witnessing community of faith in a world that doesn't do church.

Getting Back to the Basics

We "Celebrate Life."  We do so not because life naturally gives us a reason to
celebrate, but because we know the Lord of life whose grace permeates all life.
The question is, how well do we know him?  And what is it we know about him?
According to a recent Christian Today article, we may not know him as well as
we should.  In fact, many churches have neglected teaching even basic Christian
beliefs in favor of an "experiential" faith that has little grounding beyond the
experience itself.  The result?  A fragile faith easily shaken by rival ideologies.
"How can we sustain any spiritual growth,"  says this article, "If it is grounded
in something as transitory as what we feel...?"

Jesus' Journey to the Cross

Lenten Sermon Series by Pastor John Hubers

We now begin a series of sermons on the journey Jesus took to the cross asking what that journey means for our journeys of faith.  We start with a reflection on giving, noting that Jesus gave not only his best, but his all to  God.  Deuteronomy 26 reminds us that we need to do the same. The cost in this case is less than the joy that follows.

Body Language

One of the richest descriptive terms for the church is "The Body of Christ." Exploring what
that means will lead us up to Ash Wednesday, February 17th, where Jesus's journey to the
cross will be our road map through Lent.
